The Task

To provide world class training facilities at the three Team GB training camps in Brazil ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games.

With the BOA wanting to make this year’s training camp the largest and most equipped a British Team has ever had, AP were tasked with ensuring the athletes had the best S&C facilities possible in preparation for the games.
For the past two years, Absolute Performance has worked closely with the BOA to come up with the optimum solution that fits with their underpinning philosophy of “One Team GB”: which brings together its values of Pride; Responsibility, Respect, Unity and finally Performance, to help unite the cultures of all the different sports and athletes under one common philosophy and as one team.

The Solution

Create two full S&C suites that can be used by athletes across all disciplines, and a functional training area for activation and recovery within the Olympic Village.

Three members of the AP team, including MD Tony Buchanan, travelled out to Brazil to meet the four shipping containers full of equipment and fit out all three sites. The guys also assisted with the final preparations at the Olympic Village in the days leading up to the athletes’ arrival.

The main preparation camp was based at the Minas Tênis Clube, a multi-purpose athletic centre offering state-of-the-art facilities for many different sports. The club has over 70,000 members and 8 swimming pools, including the only other indoor Olympic pool in the country.

At each site we installed training areas fully equipped with top quality equipment ranging from dumbbells and resistance bands to squat stations and benches. In addition to the strength equipment, we also supplied rowing machines and Concept2 standing ski ergs as well as saunas and ice baths for recovery.

A key feature across all three sites was the Team GB branded equipment, which included lifting platforms, plyo-boxes, and training plates made by IWF accredited Werksan. Also, all racks, machines and benches were, of course, GB Red and Blue.

The Result

The guys from Absolute Performance were a pleasure to work with. Right from the inception of the project and what we were trying to achieve, they got the vision and were on hand to provide a bespoke service to allow Team GB to realise our mission statement “to create the optimum environment to allow Team GB to make history at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games”. Furthermore, Absolute Performance embody the values of “One Team GB”.

The solutions Absolute Performance provided were game changers in a challenging environment Team GB athletes were able to train in state of the art facilities that mimicked the high standard and quality they were used to back in the UK high performance system and thus create a positive impact on their performance.
